Water line insurance plan a positive for some residents

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_For about a year now, the City of Lawton has had a policy that it will not be responsible for broken water lines, and the damage it causes, when it happens on your property. That includes the cost of wasted water. But, the city has also contracted with a company to offer and insurance policy called the Service Line Warranty Program to cover those costs. We wanted to see how many folks have been signing up for the program, and if there's still confusion over what the coverage entails.

You've probably noticed one or maybe several of the letters coming to your mailbox. The city has teamed up with an insurance company that's offering a discounted price on the policy, $4.75 per month or $52 annually, to ensure that a water main break on your property is taken care of without an outrageous bill.

The price sounds right but what does this policy actually cover? Many folks were wondering if the company, Utility Service Partners, is bonded. The answer is yes. They are liable for damages that may occur during line repair. So, if a leak happens on your property.

"The homeowner would proceed to hire a contractor to do the work and that contractor would perform all the work that is required to repair the sewer line and repair the landscaping and that sort of thing," City Manager Larry Mitchell said.

If the Utility Service Partners approve your claim, all of this is at no cost to you. Some wondered why homeowners insurance didn't cover these types of repairs.

"It's outside the foundation of your house. Your homeowners insurance basically covers what's inside the foundation of your house, not between the house and your street."

Mitchell says in the last year, the response to the policy has been a positive one and the numbers back that statement up.

"In the last 12 months, 4,500 homeowners have enrolled in the program and the company has paid out $114,000 in repairs or replacements over that period of time."

We had a few Facebook responses telling us they had purchased the program and were pleased with the results. In fact, one gentleman said, after he purchased it, he had a leak and it was fixed immediately and at no cost to him.

The $114,000 that has been paid out by the insurance company represents 168 water line leaks in Lawton in the last twelve months.
