Lawmaker: Air Force changes policies after scandal

Posted: Updated:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A member of the House Armed Services committee says the Air Force is making changes after more than a dozen training instructors were investigated for sexual misconduct.

Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier said Tuesday that the Air Force is reducing instructors' hours. She said Lackland Air Force Base commanders also told her instructors can now be reprimanded simply for swearing at a trainee.

The California congresswoman says the goal is for recruits to feel less intimidated during basic training.

Speier and two other committee members toured the Texas base.

Investigators say more than 40 women at Lackland in the past year had inappropriate contact with their instructors or were sexually harassed or raped. The scandal has led to convictions against five instructors on charges ranging from adultery to sexual assault.
