Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_There is some new information on an overnight shooting that left one man dead and another in police custody.

Lawton police say 30-year-old Charles Anthony Tyson was beaten and shot to death just before 2 a.m. at a house on 24th and J Avenue. They say an argument between Tyson and another man quickly spiraled out of control.

Police are not releasing the details of the argument but neighbors said the two were arguing about a stolen gun. Police are also not releasing the identity of the possible suspect. They said he was arrested on an unrelated charge just next door to where the shooting happened.

The bloodstained porch at the unassuming house was a gruesome reminder of a brutal murder.

One neighbor was just down the street, when he heard the fatal shot.

"The closer we got we saw it was right in front of our house, so, I was paranoid. We have a 17 year old daughter in the house. Anyways, closer we got we saw it was taped up here. and there was a dead body in front porch of one of the houses"

He said his shock intensified when he realized the victim was someone he had just met earlier that day.

"I got up off my porch and went to talk to him. He was very nice to me. He said, will you tell her, that I stopped by. He was looking for another person that was there"

Captain Craig Akard said after the shooting, the suspect hopped a nearby fence and took off. He said witnesses lead them to a possible suspect. He was found surprisingly close to the crime scene.

"They knew of this gentlemen and knew where he might frequent. So, whenever they got that information, they went next door and knocked on the door."

Police also found evidence nearby. it was from the shotgun used in the murder.

"I am not aware of a weapon on him, but I do know that there were pieces of a weapon in close proximity."

Residents who have to live with this haunting memory say they're hoping this case is closed.

"If they caught the guy yes, especially for his family because its closure. but, you don't know when this is going to happen. It could happen in a million-dollar neighborhood or it could happen in our little ghetto we have here. There's good people on this street"

Captain Akard said this shooting happened in front of several witnesses. neighbors say there were a lot of people coming and going from that house that night. The suspect is still in jail.

Captain Akard said his department is expected to take their case to the district attorney's office Friday.

If charges are filed, the suspect could make a court appearance Friday.
