Amarillo College handing out safety whistles in effort to make the campus safer

Posted: Updated:

Local college students may now have another way to better protect themselves from crime.

Amarillo College is handing out safety whistles for students in an effort to make the campus a safer environment.

Amarillo College officials say the college has a great safety record, but they want to make sure it stays this way.

An official for Amarillo College's crime prevention unit says these whistles will be especially useful to students taking night classes.

"Around here especially our night students, parking is a premium and people find themselves having to walk 2 or 3 blocks to their car. And this is just another way that you got something in your hand and something close. So that if you find yourself out and alone walking to you car, then its just a way to draw attention if something spooks you, or give you that eerie feeling."

Amarillo College will be handing out these whistles again on October 31st at Community Link located at 24th and Grand from 11 am to noon and again from 5-7 pm.

On November 8th they will be at the Moore County Campus from 10 am to noon.

They will finish up on November 13th at the West Campus from 11 am to 1 pm and again from 5 to 7 pm.
