Comanche County gets new volunteer fire department

Posted: Updated:

COMANCHE COUNTY, Okla_The Valley View Volunteer Fire Department is officially part of Comanche County's roster of fire departments. The department was a part of the Flower Mound Volunteer Fire Department in eastern Comanche County.

At a public hearing Tuesday morning, the Comanche County Commissioners officially designated the boundaries for the department, from Trail Road to the eastern city limits of Lawton and between Highway 7 and Rogers Lane.

The department had to get the boundaries approved by the commissioners before joining the county's roster. During the hearing, Flower Mound Chief Josh Sullivan said he didn't understand the need for a new department.

"We've got a good resource right now. I don't see the reason of taxing more of the citizens plus more of the state to supply another fire department that the area is being taken care of right now," Sullivan said.

Valley View Chief Lin Newton said his department is well prepared to stand on its own.

"At this time we've got six firefighters that are Firefighter I or above, five EMTs, four first-responders and firefighters who are enrolled in other training classes. We have four trucks, including two trucks that carry 1000 gallons of water each."

The commissioners said that the split will not endanger the safety of the tax payers nor cost them more money.

Valley View will become its own department starting Monday at 12:01 a.m.
