Students celebrate Geography Awareness Week

Posted: Updated:

Lawton, Okla._Students at Central Middle School got a hands-on geography lesson from the City of Lawton on Wednesday.

The city's Geography Information Systems Division served as the teacher.

It was all part of National Geography Awareness Week.

The students looked a map of the city, learned about ponds and streams and even got a lesson on how to interpret maps.

Oklahoma Geography Awareness Week Co-Coordinator Denise Aguilar said,

"It brings it relevant right here close to home and, of course then they can expand on that for the world."

The students also made their own maps and competed in a poster making contest.

It was the first time the GIS. division visited Central Middle School for Geography Awareness Week. The week is sponsored by National Geographic.
