Great American Smokeout Day

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - The third Thursday of November every year is National American Smokeout Day, and Amarillo wants to help area smokers quit.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of death and premature death in the US, that's according to cancer facts and figures.

When it comes to quitting American cancer society tells me there isn't a "best" method for everyone.

Successful ways of going about spitting out the tobacco or putting that cigarette down can be different for each person.

But Amarillo has several programs aimed at helping tobacco users quit.

There are programs at the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, J.O. Wyatt Community Health Center, and Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

Terri Prescott from American Cancer Society in Amarillo says, "we have information on our web site at cancer.org or greatamericansmokeout.org, either one. Also, we have quip packs here in our office. We have information in our office. They can call us. There's some help online too."

Prescott says each year smoking results in an estimated 443,000 premature deaths, of which over 49,000 are in nonsmokers as a result of exposure to second hand smoke.
