Breast Health Coalition saving lives

Posted: Updated:

Mammogram's are essential when trying to detect breast cancer. But what about those women who are uninsured and can't afford to get screened...

The Champions of Breast Health auxiliary and the Breast Health Coalition held their Breakfast of Champions Friday morning. They recognized businesses and partners who help make what they do possible.

"Get involved and get a mammogram," Rita Bryant, Champions of Breast Health Auxiliary president says.

That's what the Amarillo Breast Health Coalition and Walmart did.

"We were very fortunate this past year to get Walmart as a partner. And they allowed us to set up in their stores with a big display, they did wonderful displays with balloons and pink ribbons. With all of the customers that came into Walmart that were willing, and we had really good luck at all of their stores in the whole panhandle from Childress on up, just to tell them about the services and ask them if they've had a mammogram, get some kind of history," Bryant says.

Those events brought success.

"We provided through our partners 80 mammogram's, and diagnosed three with breast cancer," Bryant says.

Three women whose lives they changed.

"And those women would have probably never have gotten a mammogram except for hearing about it at Walmart," Bryant says.

The Breast Health Coalition aims to help women ages 40 to 55 who don't have access to breast health services.

Bryant says they couldn't help save the lives of women without the great community support they receive.
