Arvest donates $15,000 to Lawton Food Bank

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_Christmas came early for the Lawton Food Bank on Tuesday. Arvest Bank representatives presented a check for more than $15,000 to the Lawton Food Bank as part of their one million meals program and the donation came at the perfect time. The holiday season can leave the shelves of the bank completely bare.

There is no amount too small when it comes to donating to the food bank, they're grateful for absolutely anything they receive. $15,000 exceeded Executive Director Jeri Mosiman's expectations. She said for every dollar, 5 meals can be provided to the hungry, so we're talking 75,000 meals thanks to the folks at Arvest Bank.

As everyone gathered around in the food bank you could see the emotion on Mosiman's face, she said she was going to try not to cry. But emotion over took her when the total was read aloud. She said that just two weeks ago, the food bank was close to empty and because of people's generosity, now the bank has boxes of food. In fact, another delivery was made while we were there.

Mosiman said with every donation, it gets harder to express her gratitude.

"I always go back to words can't adequately express which is why I cry probably."

She has no problem sharing her mission in life.

"I think that we're all put on this Earth to help one another and this is an easy way to do it. Everyone out there has all sorts of problems that we're unable to help with, but I can help with food."

On Monday, Mosiman and her employees fed 82 families. Thanks to Arvest, that number will surely rise. Arvest Marketing Officer Angela Spradlin said employees had two months to raise as much money as they could, collecting donations quickly became a game.

"It became more of a branch competition to see which branch could bring in the most money. We actually sold plates in our branches that were a dollar a piece, so we had several associates competing for gift cards or a free jeans day to see how many plates they could sell."

Spradlin was so touched by the mission of the food bank over the last two months, she's decided to join the board.

"We delivered several items to the food bank over the course of the two months and just seeing the need. We'd pull up here to unload a box and there would be people already lined up so the need is here and we need to step up and help."

This was the second year that Arvest has participated in the one million meals program. Last year they presented the food bank with a check for around $10,000.

Next year, they only hope to raise more.
