Thanksgiving food donations in Amarillo

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Hundreds of families in the Amarillo community will have a more "filling" Thanksgiving because of one local organization.

Volunteers have been packing and preparing the Thanksgiving food boxes since early this morning.

The line has gone down since they started handing them out around five this afternoon, but the director tells me this year's event has already been a huge success.

Family Service Center Dir. Mindy Briggs says, "our first night we had 111 families, which was a new record for us in just one hour and half period of time. Our volunteers were cross eyed when they got out of here, but so excited that we were able to help as many families as we did. We anticipate after tonight we will have given thanksgiving meals to about 4,000 families in the Amarillo community."

This is the fourth and final night the Family Service Center will be giving out these Thanksgiving boxes.

Briggs tells us without help from businesses in the community, they would not be able to help provide food for area families for thanksgiving, as well as the entire holiday week.

She says this event is made possible through support from the community.

The Food Bank donates bread and other food items, which they receive from businesses right here in our area.

Briggs says, "the only way we can give food and salad and sweets to our families is if stores like Albertsons, United, Sam's, and Walmart will donate it to the food bank."

Volunteer David Thurston says, "we have a congregation that supports it whole-heartedly. And some other people in the community. There's loving people in Amarillo. So, his is an outlet for them."

The Family Service Center has grown since it began nearly 18 years ago.

When it started they helped two or three families per month, and now it's over 1,000.

And everyone who took part says it's a privilege to be involved.

Thurston says, "it's nice to be able to help, and it's nice to be able to spend your time doing something that's worthy. In this community it's worthy.

The director says as long as the community is willing to donate, they plan to help feed area residents in need every Thanksgiving.
