Oklahoma adds 160 CNG vehicles to state fleet

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Gov. Mary Fallin says the Oklahoma Department of Transportation has added 160 compressed natural gas vehicles to its fleet.

Officials say the four Honda Civics and 156 three-quarter-ton Dodge Ram pickups will primarily be used by field division offices across Oklahoma.

Fallin says replacing state vehicles that run on gasoline with those that use natural gas will save millions of dollars in fuel costs.

The state says the new CNG vehicles cost $5 million. Each vehicle is estimated to save about $20,000 over the life of the vehicle in fuel and maintenance costs.

Secretary of Transportation Gary Ridley says the transportation department plans to replace more than 90% of its fleet with CNG vehicles over the next three years.
