Shopping with smartphones

Posted: Updated:

Shopping with smart phones is a trend that's expected to increase this holiday season.

About half of consumers own smart phones and around 70% of them plan on using them for holiday shopping this year according to a new survey by Deloitte.

While it may be easy to jump to the cheapest deal whether you're familiar with a company or not, you may want to keep these tips in mind.

Area technology experts suggest staying away from apps. Open up a browser, go to the website directly, and check the address bar for a security icon. The same applies if you receive links to shopping sites in your email, go to the actual site.

And the BBB recommends using a credit card instead of a debit card. CEO Janna Kiehl says, "It offers some protections in case you don't get your merchandise. In case your number is abused or stolen with an online transaction. Any other transaction that you're not aware of."

Other tips include using Wi-Fi that you know is protected by password. The majority of the times on public Wi-Fi, anyone can see your usernames, passwords and credit card numbers.
