LAWTON, Okla_Students in the Lawton area are learning the value of recycling. 2012 is the 11th year of "Project Re-Directory," a phone book recycling program.
LPS students are collecting phone books through the rest of this month to be picked up by Republic Paper Board and recycled. The Yellow Pages Company will pay cash incentives to the schools that collect the most books.
LPS Communications Director Keith Mitchell said the programs teach the students environmental responsibility.
"Everything has more than one use. Here's a case where something is outdated. We are a throw away society but this is a way to teach kids that they can help save the environment. Help save trees by taking these phone books by sending them off to be recycled"
Mitchell said in the first 10 years of the program, students collected 64,000 books and in the past 3 years they've collected 10,000 per year.
