Suspected shooter of a Lawton woman in custody

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ Lawton police say they have the suspected shooter of a Lawton mother in custody.

He's been identified as Stephone Carter. Police believe Carter shot and killed Tanya Zachary in late October. Zachary was found dead on the floor of a Sanders Heights apartment after she had been shot while she was baby sitting.

Stephone Carter and a friend were arrested on assault and battery charges after an elderly man was severely beaten by the men and had also been attacked by the men's dog. Today, police say Carter had already been developed as suspect in Zachary's murder prior to his arrest. A police report states that, while in custody, Carter admitted to going to the apartment where Zachary was found. He told police there had been an argument and that he had shot her.

A murder case has been presented to the district attorney's office.

Carter is already a two time convicted felon. He is being held on an assault and battery charge for last week's arrest and is also being held on charges for murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.
