Cannon work planned for Elgin

Posted: Updated:

Washington, D.C.- Elgin is back in the spotlight when it comes to the U.S. Army's self-propelled howitzer.

Senator Jim Inhofe and Congressman Tom Cole say the Paladin cannon will be modified at BAE Systems industrial park in Elgin. The plan is to upgrade the 155 millimeter cannon to increase performance and reliability.

You'll remember the Department of Defense scrapped plans to build the new Crusader artillery system in Elgin several years ago. The lawmakers say the Army plans to acquire 581 retooled Paladins and test them at Fort Sill. It's expected to bring new jobs to Elgin when production begins next year.
