Local high school graduation rates

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - More students in Amarillo high schools are successful in getting their diplomas on time.

Texas ranks fourth in the nation with the highest percentage of high school students putting on their cap and gown.

And Amarillo Independent School District is full of students and alumni who are helping contribute to that success.

Identifying potential drop outs sooner is what AISD's executive director of student performance believes is responsible for the increase.

She says student's positive relationships with faculty also pay a major role.

AISD Superintendent Rod Schroder says, "district rate for graduation is 87.4 percent. So 87.4 percent of our students are graduating on time. In other words, in four years. We're pleased with that, but we obviously want that over 90 percent. And you can see that trend line is up."

The trend line he's referring to is the graph of AISD graduation rates he showed me, which is up nearly five percent from 2010, and is higher than the state.
