LAWTON Okla_ A head-on crash
in northwest Lawton
Friday injured two people. One is in serious condition.
It happened
around 11:30 AM on Cache Road
between Goodyear Boulevard
and Northwest 82nd street.
Investigators say witnesses saw the SUV driving east on Cache Road and a pickup going west, when
it appeared the SUV crossed the center line.
Lawton Police Captain
Craig Akard said the two drivers were the only people involved. The driver of
the SUV was airlifted to an Oklahoma City
hospital in serious condition.
The pickup
driver was taken to Comanche
County Memorial
Hospital with minor
injuries. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the SUV
driver to cross the center line.
Lawton police captain
Craig Akard said the accident scene looked severe, but both drivers made it out
alive.
"The individual
in the SUV wasn't trapped," Akard said. "But, we had to wait until fire got
there to use some of their tools to get him out. The driver of the pickup was
dazed."
Witnesses told
police the SUV appeared to cross into oncoming traffic.
"We don't
know what the circumstances were that caused it to go across the center line,"
Akard said.
He said car
safety features played a crucial role in saving the lives of both drivers.
"Either
one of them coming out of this accident would be a good testament to the way
that they build cars now and days… and the airbags."
The accident
did shut down east and west-bound traffic for a few hours, but the road has
been opened again.
Captain Akard said at this time, they are not releasing the names of the
drivers until the families have been notified.
