Tour of Homes raising money for Lawton Food for Kids

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON Okla_ Lawton's Oak Ridge Addition is hosting a Tour of Homes, designed to give people decoration ideas for the holidays.

On Saturday, four of the houses in the Oak Ridge Addition will be decked out with beautiful Christmas decorations, lights and seventeen Christmas trees in all.

For just $5, you can stroll through each of these beautiful homes, hear festive music and even get some great decorating ideas. Every dollar raised from the event will be donated to the Lawton Food for Kids program and will help keep dozens of children across town from going hungry this holiday season.

Jackson Elementary Principal Jacquetta Haygood has watched the Food for Kids program make a huge difference in students' lives over the past three years.

"These students look forward to these bags on Friday," Haygood said. "They will come looking for us if we miss them."

The bags she's talking about are filled with snacks that 47 students from her school take home each weekend to keep from going hungry.

"It makes us feel good," Haygood said. "Hopefully, it makes them feel good, because they know this is something our school cares about."We are trying to take care of the whole child."

Haygood said it's not just about getting a cool treat; these snacks help fuel their energy for learning

"It's very essential. Students are sitting in class with their stomachs growling and they're hungry. It's hard for them to think. It's hard for them to learn."

The Tour of Homes runs from 5 PM until 8 PM Saturday. The cost is $5, and you will need to get that ticket at the first home on the tour. Just follow the signs and banners and you should have no problem finding your way.
