NEWTOWN, Conn._ (AP)

President Barack Obama is in Connecticut, where he's to meet privately with families of the victims of Friday's mass school shooting that left 26 people dead, 20 of them children.

In the evening, the president will speak at an interfaith vigil in Newtown, where Sandy Hook Elementary School is located.

Authorities say they found multiple 30-round magazines and hundreds of bullets at Sandy Hook Elementary School. That suggests that gunman Adam Lanza was planning an even more gruesome massacre, but was stopped short.

Officials say before heading to the school, Lanza fatally shot his mother, Nancy, four times in the head at their home.
