Building implosion near Pampa draws crowd

Posted: Updated:

A long-time area landmark near Pampa now lays in ruins on the ground after being imploded Sunday evening.

The 300 ft. stack and a coal boiler at the former Celanese Plant site near Pampa came crumbling down about 5:30 p.m. Universal wrecking company out of New Jersey was contracted to perform the demolition. Hundreds gathered to see the exciting action Saturday and after a large boom, and even shaking of the ground, some residents who came out to spectator said not seeing that building standing there every day is going to take some getting used to.

"Everybody started honking their horns as soon as it all came down," said Pampa Resident Ricky Morgan. "Probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my lifetime. It's definitely weird not having it there. Just the instant it came down I was like man, that's something that's always been a part of Pampa and it's probably something that will always be a part of Pampa."

The implosion was arranged by the Pampa Economic Development Corporation as it paves the way for new development.
