OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Teachers and school administrators who receive proper training would be authorized to carry firearms on school campuses and at school events under a bill being drafted by an Oklahoma lawmaker.
Republican Rep. Mark McCullough of Sapulpa says his bill would allow school officials to carry weapons if they've received training through the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, or CLEET.
McCullough says schools have become "soft targets" and that it's critical that lawmakers start taking steps to ensure the safety of children at schools.
He says a properly trained, armed school official could help prevent the kind of "senseless evil" that happened Friday in Newtown, Conn., when a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults before killing himself at an elementary school.
