Christmas day on the job

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - TxDOT workers weren't the only ones busy this Christmas day. For many in Amarillo, this holiday was spent at work.

Christmas is full of presents, family and food. But may people have spent Christmas on the job.

This year's white Christmas was spent at work by many here in Amarillo.

"Well we have a total of 35 employees, and we've rotated every one of them through here today. Some of them will work shorter shifts, some of them a little longer. But, everybody's got to work today," Tracy Hendrix, Furr's Fresh Buffet general manager says.

Furr's Fresh Buffet is open every holiday. Hendrix says being open today gives families options, and even those alone today.

"Our customers enjoyed it. A lot of them have thanked us for being open for them. Like I said, some of them wouldn't have any where else to go if they didn't come to Furr's today," Hendrix says.

Hendrix says his employees haven't minded serving others this Christmas. An incentive for most working on the holiday is the extra pay.

"I've had several that wanted to work extra time. Definitely that helps out a lot," Hendrix says.

Over at Denny's they say the pay is what drives them to work holidays.

"It's not bad. It's lot's of money. I love money," Lindy Phillips, Denny's head trainer says.

Many of them say they enjoy spending their holidays with others.

"We've all been doing really good. Everyone wants to go home to get to their families now. Like everybody's getting tired, so they're switching out. I'm working until five o'clock, so I'm not leaving until then," Phillips says.

Many of them celebrated their holidays either yesterday or were planning to later Christmas night.
