Altus Air Force Base sends aid to Haiti

Posted: Updated:

Altus, Okla._Altus Air Force Base is sending more than 137,000 pounds of food and humanitarian aid to the island nation of Haiti. Dry-goods were loaded onto a C-17 Globemaster III early Friday morning.

The 97th Air Mobility Wing will ensure the food will arrive safely to feed the more than 9,500 children in need.

A commander said they were more than happy to participate in this mission even during the holidays.

"The Air Force has this mission set of global reach, global power, global or put another way - the ability to respond anywhere, any time to need. And so, here we have this example of people who are in need, and we at Altus get to play a part. It's a big honor. It's big honor," said Casey Eaton, 97th Air Mobility Wing vice commander.

The wing partnered up with "Operation Ukraine", an organization that collects food and supplies for various relief efforts.

The food will be delivered to support orphanages and school lunch programs in Haiti.
