Wells Fargo becomes third Amarillo bank robbed this week

Posted: Updated:
AMARILLO - Police are searching for a man who robbed a Wells Fargo bank at gunpoint Monday afternoon.

Police were dispatched to the Wells Fargo at 2000 S. Washington at 12:40 p.m. Bank employees told officers that a man got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, after demanding money from a teller.

Surveillance video shows the suspect pointing what police say is semi-automatic handgun at the teller.

The suspect is described as a white male in his late 20s, five feet, eight inches tall, with light-colored hair, and no facial hair. The suspect's get-away car was not seen.

This robbery is the third within a week.

Amarillo police officers, crime scene investigation officers, and the FBI were also on the scene of a robbery at a Bank of America on Wednesday, and the Amarillo National Bank on Soncy on Saturday.

"I don't believe these cases are being investigated as connected," Amarillo Police Sergeant Brent Barbee said. "But we can never toss that possibility aside."

The suspect in Wednesday's Bank of America robbery was caught later that evening thanks to a caller tip who saw the surveillance footage on the news. The FBI says that's the number one way that suspects are caught: tips from the community.

"The cooperation from local law enforcement and the FBI is what really makes the robberies possible to solve in conjunction with the public's assistance," FBI Public Affairs Officer Katherine Chaumont said.

Barbee said a check of media releases from the past show that Amarillo had six bank robberies in 2012, zero in 2011, and only one in 2010.

National and State statistics from the FBI show a significant decrease from 2010 to 2011. The numbers for 2012 are not yet calculated.
