Amarillo, Texas - Amarillo drivers will be required to put their cell phones down and keep both hands on the wheel starting Thursday. City officials are still trying to educate drivers.
The cell phone ordinance we've been waiting for since September will finally go into effect Thursday. City officials are still, however, pushing to educate local drivers.
Starting Thursday television PSA's similar to these will begin airing and local newspapers will also be carrying the "One Text Or Call Could Wreck It All" message. City officials will also be holding educational presentations.
"They give us a unique opportunity to answer the many questions people still have about this ordinance. Even though it was passed by commissioners in September and doesn't go into effect until tomorrow, we still have a lot, and there's been great publicity about it, people still have questions. Can we use two-way radios, can we use GPS, can we do this, can we do that? So, answering those individual questions that people have, that's what those presentations give us an opportunity to do," Sonja Gross, City of Amarillo Community Relations Coordinator says.
The city is working towards including high schools to their list of presentations.
