Oklahoma DHS moves its youngest from shelters

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The Oklahoma Department of Human Services says it has completed a plan to move all children younger than 2 from shelters and into family-like settings.

The agency announced Wednesday that it met its goal to have completed the move by the start of the new year. By June 30, DHS intends to have all children age 6 and younger moved from its shelters.

And by June 30, 2014, the agency wants all children younger than 13 placed in family settings.

The moves are part of DHS' Pinnacle Plan.

The Tulsa World reports (http://is.gd/6G8mav ) that the agency says it can better focus its resources on older age groups with the youngest children moved from the shelters.

The agency needs to recruit 2,000 new foster parents to meet its June 30 goal.
