Group prepares to mail 5,800 packages of beef jerky to troops

Posted: Updated:

This past weekend, Frito Lay, United Supermarkets and America Supports You Texas put on a Beef Jerky Donation Drive For Our Troops. Thursday, all of those donations were delivered to the home of the care box coordinator, but soon they'll be halfway around the world, just like our overseas troops.

"We've got beef jerky all over everywhere," laughed Luan Martin, Care Box Coordinator for America Supports You Texas.

But Martin wasn't really bothered that some 5,800 packages of beef jerky were cluttering her dining room and garage because eventually, the contents of those boxes won't fill her house, but the hearts and stomachs of U.S. troops serving overseas.

"It's very easy to just put in their backpacks and go out on missions," explained Martin. "Because they go out on a week mission or something like that they can get several bags of the beef jerky because it's easy to eat and then it's gone and that's it."

The boxes will not only be sent to a list of troops native to the Panhandle, but also to their brothers and sister in uniform.

"If they've got 30 in their unit then we may send 20-25 boxes to that unit and they'll have enough to share with everybody," she said. "Including the interpreters that are with them or the allies that are in their unit."

But before any troops are licking their lips, care box packers will have to lick a lot of stamps, as postage costs are one area this group is still lacking.

"This will be over $1,500 to get it in the mail to our troops," Martin added. "We can only do it with the communities help because that's the only way we can get the postage fund is through donations."

A labor of love, for heroes who haven't quit.

"We know that every box we send," she said, "is a box of love."
