Tejano Democrats to begin business

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - A local group that hopes to increase voter turn out will finally be made official this evening.

We first told you about the Panhandle Tejano Democrat Club back in July, and they will finally become an official chapter at their meeting Tuesday.

Since then they have grown to 30 members.

Although they have yet to conduct any business, once chartered, they say that will change.

One of their main goals is to get Hispanic voters to show up at the polls on election day.

"The plans are very clear. Making the population, the members, Amarillo, the surrounding areas aware of the issues. Teaching them, showing them how important it is to vote. To get out, to register if you are a citizen and go out and vote," Vicente Soto, Panhandle Tejano Democrats 2nd Vice President says.

Members say they are unsure why voter turn out is low for this ethnic group. But, they will be doing all they can to change that.

Guest speakers and several community events will be held throughout the year.

They are open for membership to all surrounding counties in the panhandle and every ethnicity.
