Obama's plan to curb gun violence

Posted: Updated:

The battle on gun control continues.

The President announced his plans to better protect Americans from another shooting incident and it's stirring up controversy.

While most Democrats released generally supportive statements of Obama's new gun proposals, Republicans immediately rejected them as an attack on the constitutional right to bear arms.

Here's the proposals being presented to Congress: A universal background check for every gun sale, banning military-style assault weapons like the one used in Newtown, as well as ammunition magazines that hold more than ten rounds.

Obama also signed 23 executive actions; which include, making sure schools and other institutions are equipped and prepared for the possibility of shooter situations, aggressively prosecuting gun crime and improving mental health resources.

These executive actions do not require congressional approval.

It's expected that the President's new call for restricting some semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines will face resistance.
