Dumas Police Chief resigns

Posted: Updated:

Dumas, TX - An area police chief has resigned after many years of serving the community.

An executive session was held Monday night in Dumas at the city commission meeting, where the fate of Dale Alwan's position was discussed.

NewsChannel 10 was in the meeting and found out the reason for his resignation as police chief.

The regular session began at 6:30 PM but dozens of residents began showing up about thirty minutes before.

Many more were watching at home on a live TV feed.

City commissioners then went into an executive session that was closed to the public.

After about an hour they accepted Alwan's resignation, saying it was agreed a change was needed.

"There's no bad behavior or anything else. It was just time for a change and Chief Alwan recognized that and resigned," says Tom Moore, Dumas City Attorney.

Residents waited the entire time to find out what would happen.

Some tell us they are happy with the decision because they began losing confidence in the police chief over the last several years.

Others say they would have liked Alwan to continue serving their community, a position he's had for 17 years.

Alwan will stay on with the city as a consultant for 10 months.

His duties will be to help the interim and successor chief when asked to do so.
