Claude ISD student drug testing

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Random drug testing of some Claude ISD students goes into effect Wednesday.

The Claude ISD school board unanimously approved testing in the schools back in December.

The policy will start after a parent meeting being held tonight.

The school says it plans to test randomly selected students, grades seven through twelve, who are involved in extracurricular activities.

We spoke with the Superintendent today who says the goal of this random testing is to give students "an out" to peer pressure, and simply a reason and a want to say "no."

If a student test positive they will be suspended from activities for 20 days and go to counseling.

If a second test is failed, the student's suspension will be for one year.
