Push to stop insurers in Texas from penalizing customers

Posted: Updated:

Texas - There's a push to have insurance companies in Texas adopt a standard homeowner policy.

This is all in an effort to better protect policyholders.

Many consumers call their insurance companies when they have questions about their coverage or claims but what they don't know is that in some cases they may be penalized.

A senate committee is reporting calls for legislation that would prohibit insurers from using customer inquiries to cancel policies or decline to renew them, or to increase premiums.

A survey conducted by the Texas Department of Insurance found that several insurance companies across the state have been doing this.

Insurance industry representatives say they're open to the idea of a standard policy, which companies lobbied to get rid of several years ago.

This new effort is getting support from leading consumer group Texas Watch.
