Possibility of texting while driving ban in Texas

Posted: Updated:

Texas - There's a renewed push to ban texting while driving throughout the entire state of Texas.

Three bills were filed in November and several lawmakers are urging their colleagues to support the legislation.

Two of the bills would ban typing on a hand-held device for the purpose of sending an electronic message; covering everything from posting on Facebook, Twitter, sending an email or sending a traditional text message.

The third bill seeks to make any use of a cell phone without a hands-free device illegal.

During the 2011 legislative session, similar bills were passed, only to be vetoed by Governor Rick Perry in June.

Advocates say it's time for us to pass a uniform law to keep drivers on the road safe.

Relatives of those killed in accidents caused by texting while driving just recently spoke out at a legislative briefing to spread awareness of the dangers.

We spoke with the Amarillo Police Department who say they issued 35 warnings this past month to those violating the city's hands-free cell phone ordinance.

Starting Saturday, February 2nd, officers will begin issuing citations to anyone in violation.
