Amarillo, Texas - It's the number one killer of women not only in America, but also here in the panhandle.
Friday kicks off the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign for the month of February. Several area businesses will also be supporting the cause throughout the month. But, one local association is doing more than just going red, they're helping to educate women.
The Texas Cattle Feeders Association and "Go Red for Women" are not two organizations that would normally be lumped together.
"We are proud to support the women of Amarillo and the high plains, but also get the word out that beef can be an absolute good part of a heart healthy diet," Jim Bret Campbell, Texas Cattle Feeders Association Director of Communications and Member Relations.
The Texas Cattle Feeders Association is one of the sponsors for the Go Red for Women luncheon to be held on February 12th. There they will have a registered dietitian explaining the importance of beef to heart health.
"Nutritionist really tell us that there are 29 beef cuts that are considered lean. And they provide in addition to protein, essential nutrients that we all need to provide good heart health and just to stay healthy in general," Campbell says.
Shara Hinchey with the American Heart Association says it is important to educate women on this diet information.
"Women are the number one shoppers in the household. So, when they're going to the grocery store it's good for them to know not just for themselves, but for their families what choices they need to make. And living in west Texas, beef is a huge part of our diets," Hinchey says.
Not only is diet important for heart health, but Hinchey says many women are unaware they are even at risk for heart disease. Only 1% of the population is in what the American Heart Association considers good cardiovascular health.
A health expo will take place before the luncheon where women can get heart health screenings. The event will start at 9:30 a.m. at the Amarillo Civic Center.
