Middle school students show off science smarts in 'Science Bowl'

The West Texas A&M University campus was packed with students Saturday afternoon, but this bunch was a bit younger than you might suspect.

Hundreds of middle school students came from some 15 schools across the area to participate in the annual Science Bowl Competition hosted by Pantex. The more than 30 teams of kids competed by answering questions in math and science for prizes, bragging rights, and the chance to represent the area at the national competition in Washington D.C.

Aside from the competition, all the teams agreed that it takes a ton of hard work and preparation to get ready for a event like this one.

"To win this competition, it all is relative to how much effort you put into it," said Nikit Desai, a former National Contestant. "Because whenever I made it my 6th grade year we put in a tremendous amount of effort, we spent our summer studying together and doing practice rounds together."

"They actually trained for this," added Greg Cunningham, Public Affairs Specialist for Pantex. "For months they've been preparing, studying their practice questions, studying their science and they take it very seriously and that chance to go to D.C. is a big motivator for them."

The Dumas Junior High School black team took home first place, earning $1,000 for the school's science program. Second place and $500 went to the Canyon Junior High purple team, and third place and a $250 prize went to the Panhandle Junior High purple team.

The largesse of Jay Shidler? Well, that's the gift that just keeps on giving. And when I say "keeps on giving", I mean for the next one hundred years!

Hawaii comes the now-annual reminder that we also have a worsening doctor shortage throughout our state.

On the heels of my editorial earlier this week about the now-annual teacher shortage we face in Hawaii comes the now-annual reminder that we also have a worsening doctor shortage throughout our state.
