Altus police officers arrested

Posted: Updated:

Altus_Two veteran police officers with the Altus Police Department have been arrested.  Russell Hansel, who's been on the force 17 years, and Jose Arce, who's been there 11 years, were arrested following a six-month joint investigation between the Altus PD and the FBI.

Hansel was jailed on a complaint of grand larceny and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.  Arce was arrested for conspiracy to commit a felony.

Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy did not release further details of the crime, but released a statement, saying,

"The actions of these two officers have placed a dark cloud over our police department. Corruption at any level will never be acceptable. Society holds police officers to a higher expectation of behavior and conduct. Although the investigation lasted many months the end result was two police officers facing felony charges.

I would like to give special recognition to Detective Bill Perkins, who worked closely with the F.B.I. to bring about the successful closure of this investigation, which led to the arrest of these two officers."

The case has been sent to the Jackson County District Attorney's office for prosecution.
