Elementary school put on lockdown after off-campus shooting

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - A lockdown at an area elementary school has been lifted.

As a precaution, Mesa Verde will have a controlled entry and extra security presence for the remainder of the school day.

It all started when Amarillo Police responded to a shooting at the 7300 block of Fleming early Thursday morning.

A 26 year-old female advised officers that a male subject had just fired a shot at her and then took off.

No one was injured in the incident but since the victim has children that attend Mesa Verde Elementary, they decided to go on lockdown as a precaution.

School officials stress that there was no direct or indirect threat to anyone at the campus. AISD is currently working with authorities.

Right now officers remain on the scene where the shooting occurred gathering information. The case will be presented to the 47th District Attorneys office.
