Dalhart animal cruelty case sparks peaceful protest

Posted: Updated:

NewsChannel 10 has been following an animal cruelty case in Dalhart since nearly 70 animals were first seized from a woman's home there more than a month ago. As the case became public, a group of citizens in dDlhart came together to fight animal abuse in their community.

Saturday morning, the Citizens Against Abuse in Dalhart hosted a peaceful protest from ten to noon. Organizers say they were offering low cost micro chipping to pet owners, discounts on sterilization, as well as encouraging more people to register to vote. By have more active voters in the community they said, they hope they can change laws and ordinances regarding punishments for animal cruelty.

"It's really important that we have people registered to vote," said Katie Foster, founder of the group. "I mean, there's no way to really make changes unless we have people that are actively participating in the community and I think it's a good way to turn a negative situation into a positive."

More than 50 people showed up for the protest. They also had about 80 people sign a petition the group hopes to send to state senator Kel Seliger's office in hopes of obtaining harsher penalties in animal cruelty cases.
