Babysitter training class teaches responsibility to young teens

Posted: Updated:

Many young teens looking to become a babysitter or wanting a little advice about watching their younger siblings, learned a few tricks of the trade Saturday at a local babysitter's training class.

The Texas Panhandle American Red Cross hosted the class for eleven to 15-year-olds. The all day course taught these young teens how to handle emergencies, manage young children, how to feed, diaper and care for infants as well as even how to better communicate with the parents of the children they're babysitting.

"We actually give them a certificate so they can take that to parents and say hey look I've been trained by the Red Cross, I've gone through the babysitters training," said Texas Panhandle American Red Cross Executive Director Steve Pair. "So the parents maybe feel a little bit more at ease leaving their kids in the hands of this babysitter."

The American Red Cross typically hosts training classes like this one once every two months. The next is coming up sooner though, and will take place the Saturday during spring break.
