Wreck and stranded vehicle totals during blizzard

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - The Amarillo Police Department says they've responded to dozens of vehicle wrecks and stranded vehicles.

Since midnight they estimate they've received around 230 calls. They tell us 50 of those calls were in response to stranded vehicles. Officers say they are finding multiple cars stranded when responding to a location.

Area towing companies have also been helping out. One company we spoke with says they responded to five stranded police cars this morning.

Response times for Amarillo Police and Fire Departments are slower than usual right now.

The Amarillo Fire Department says they encourage residents not to go out in this weather.

Amarillo Police have a limited number of vehicles equipped with four wheel drive and several police vehicles have already had to be towed after getting stuck during assistance calls.

The less trucks they have tied up responding to stuck vehicles, the better their response time can be for other emergencies.
