Auto insurance and wintry weather

Amarillo, TX - Since Monday's (Feb. 25th) storm, Amarillo police have responded to more than 70 wrecks in the city.  And if you've ever been in a wreck, you know the expense and the stress of dealing with insurance claims.  but knowing what your policy actually covers can spare you a lot of grief down the road.

Texas state law only requires you to have liability coverage, which protects you if you hit another car.  Comprehensive coverage encompasses weather-related damage from things like blizzards, hail, and high winds - all of which we see in west Texas.  And collision insurance covers your car repairs and medical bills in the event of an accident.  Experts recommend all three, as Robin Bockelman of Alice Brooks Insurance Agency of Amarillo, says, "If you want your car to be covered, you're going to want to have comp and collision, just to cover all those areas."

Icy roads, however are not considered a 'weather condition,' as accidents are generally attributed to driver error, meaning it would fall under your collision policy.

"You can have comp without collision," says Bockelman, "but bottom line - if you want your car covered, if you slide on the ice and collide with something or someone, and you want your car covered, you're going to need collision."
