Pampa Meals on Wheels in Need of Younger Volunteers

Posted: Updated:

PAMPA - The recent blizzard highlighted the need for younger Meals on Wheels volunteers in Pampa.

Petie Bullis is one of the youngest volunteers who delivers a hot meal to elderly clients every day.

"Ever since I moved here, it seemed there were always in need," Bullis said. "So I've been doing it for five or six years and really enjoyed it."

Bullis made the same route Wednesday and Thursday through a Pampa apartment complex, dropping off 25 plates.

Volunteers were able to get out and start delivering meals two days after the storm, but slick ice on sidewalks making it difficult for those older volunteers.

"Some of the older people who volunteer, they can't get out," Bullis said. "So it would be nice to get younger volunteers for that reason, and also just to get some young people involved."

Most volunteers are in the same age group as the clients they serve, including Larry Morse, who offers his service everyday despite ongoing health problems after having a heart transplant 20 years ago.

"You will receive more than you give, I promise you that," Morse said.

About 170 people rely on those meals everyday.

"Meals on wheels has been a life saver for me," said Earline Folks.

Folks says the daily delivery is the only way she can afford a balanced, healthy meal.

"It's not always easy to have enough groceries for a whole month for some of us elderly folk who have a fixed income," Folks said.

The program also needs volunteers with four wheel drive vehicles, so when the next storm comes, the elderly do not have to go without a hot meal.

To volunteer, you can contact Pampa Meals on Wheels at (806)669-1007 or email them at pampamealsonwheels@hotmail.com.
