Snack Pak 4 Kids in need of supplies for spring break

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Spring break is a time most students look forward to, but those who rely on school lunches might not feel the same way.

Snack Pak 4 Kids has grown to serve 2,400 elementary school students in Amarillo alone. Many of those students we're told would go without food over the weekends. So when it comes to school breaks, this program is crucial.

One hundred and seventy five students at Will Roger's Elementary school rely on the Snack Pak 4 Kids program. It's something principal Terri Huseman says her students are thankful for.

"Our social worker and our parent volunteer that puts the bag in the lockers have reported when the lockers are in the classroom, they open the door and take them into the classroom that there is a sense of relief with the kids when they see the bags are coming," Huseman says.

She says her kids look forward to every week, but especially so before holiday breaks.

"I think it's because they know that the food is available and that they are going to be able to have something over the holiday," Huseman says.

Tuesday evening 150 volunteers will be packing bags for students, but one big need still is peanut butter.

"It's an incredible protein source for these kids. And these kids need protein. Many times we talk about empty calories, and empty fillers, but this is a significant protein source for these kids, and we've found that it certainly bridges the gap for these kids over a long holiday," Dyron Howell, Snack Pak 4 Kids founder says.

They still need 350 jars of peanut butter to ensure every child will receive one. And it isn't just Amarillo students who need help. Bushland, Borger, Dalhart, Dumas, Fritch, Hereford and Tulia all have programs in need of donations.

If you would like to donate to Snack Pak you can drop goods off at their warehouse on 5th and Johnson or at Groovy Pop Popcorn at 34th and Bell.
