LPS Seeks Employee Award Nominations

Posted: Updated:

Every family knows someone who goes "that extra mile" to make a child's school day the best it can be. It's not always the teacher; sometimes it's the school secretary, a server in the lunch line, a bus driver or a custodian.

Giving those people a pat on the back is the concept behind "Champion for Children" and the "Extra Mile" awards. These are part of the Lawton Public Schools' annual employee recognition program. Since its inception in 1999, More than 200 LPS employees have been presented these honors.

Any full-time LPS employee may be nominated for his or her outstanding service to Lawton students, or to the district. The primary selection criterion is the employee's dedication to the teaching profession and to students. Past "Champions for Children" and "Extra Mile" recipients are not eligible for consideration, and posthumous nominations will not be accepted.

Nominations may be submitted to the LPS Communications Office in the John Shoemaker Education Center until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14.

Nominations must be submitted using the official form and must be accompanied by letters of nomination that give specific examples of the nominee's outstanding service. These letters are an important part of the evaluation process, since their quality and the examples of service they describe are the main factors in selecting honorees. A panel will evaluate nominations and select of up to 10 to be honored with "Extra Mile" awards. One additional nominee will be named the district's 2013 Champion for Children.

These individuals will be honored at the annual LPS Celebration of Education to be held April 22 in the restored auditorium at Lawton City Hall. The district's 2013 Teacher of the Year and Rookie of the Year will also be announced.

Champion for Children and Extra Mile award nomination forms are available at each school in the district, or at the information desk at the Shoemaker Education Center, 753 Fort Sill Blvd.
