Possible minimum wage increase in New Mexico

Posted: Updated:

Clovis, New Mexico - New Mexico could soon be seeing a hike in their minimum wage. An increase has been approved by the state's Senate and goes to the House next.

If approved, New Mexico's state minimum wage would go from $7.50 an hour to $8.50 an hour. Lawmakers who proposed the bill say an increase would be good for the state's economy. But, some area business owners disagree.

Owner of Taco Box in Clovis says over the years they've seen several wage increases, and they've all lead to one thing, an increase in prices for customers.

"I think the short term effect is yes it will help the person who is making minimum wage. Long term effect is there will be no effect except that prices will go up," Tom Martin, Taco Box owner says.

Martin says the wages of all his employees would have to increase to compensate for the higher wage rate. But to compensate for higher employee wages it would ultimately come from consumer's pockets. He says the cost of living just keeps getting higher.
