Airport security measure changes raising concerns

Amarillo, TX - There are new security measures to be aware of before heading to the airport next month.

The Transportation Security Agency is now allowing airline passengers to carry small folding knives with blades that are 2.36 inches or less in length and are less than 1/2-inch wide.

Passengers also will be allowed to bring onboard as part of their carry-on luggage novelty-sized baseball bats less than 24 inches long, toy plastic bats, billiard cues, ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and two golf clubs, the agency said.

The new policy change goes into effect on April 25.

But not everyone agrees with the agency's decision.

It drew an immediate outcry from unions representing flight attendants and other airline workers.

They say these items are a real threat to passengers and flight attendants.

An internal TSA working group defends their decision and stresses that the items represent no real danger.

They instead want to focus their energy on what they call serious security threats.

There has been a gradual easing of some of the security measures applied to airline passengers over the past few years...

One of the more recent changes is that travelers 75 years and older no longer have to remove shoes or light jackets at airport checkpoints.
