SWAT standoff ends peacefully

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - A police standoff in Amarillo was resolved quickly and peacefully Wednesday afternoon (March 6).

Earlier Wednesday, some concerned residents called our newsroom to ask why a SWAT team was outside a house in the Sunset Terrace area.  As it turned out, the standoff was brief and ended peacefully, so those concerns can be laid to rest.

Just before 5:00, Amarillo Police responded to a home in the 400 block of Sunset Terrace on a welfare check.  An officer on scene told us a man had locked himself in the home and was refusing to come out.

Police feared the man might harm himself, and called in the SWAT team in the interest of public safety. Eventually, they were able to coax the man outside without incident and took him to a local hospital for a psychological evaluation.

As it stands now, the man is not facing any criminal charges.
