Fit Kids Builds Excitement With Poster Contest

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_What does bicycling mean to you? That's what Fit Kids of Southwest Oklahoma is asking all fifth graders across Comanche County.

The Fit Kids of Southwest Oklahoma Coalition is committed to creating healthier lifestyles for children and their families, and as a new way of getting the word out about their cause, they're holding a poster drawing contest for all fifth grade aged kids in our area.

The Fit Kids Coalition has so much going on, but over the past year or so they've started to realize they haven't been getting the word out about their trail system and different events like they'd hope. So when they heard about the national 'Bikes Make Life Better' poster contest they decided to join in with the hopes of getting a new crop of kids excited about staying fit.

"A family fun activity where you're engaged together, you're doing stuff together. And really supporting each other and not just sitting inside watching TV all day."

That's what bicycling means to Kyle Rogers, Fit Kids Coordinator and the leader behind the poster contest.

Rogers grew up in the community, and now she's opening an entire new generation's eyes to the excitement of hiking and biking.

"There's so much around us and so much available, and when I start telling people about the trailway or the Fitness in Action series that's newly been created and all of the opportunities there are to lead healthy lifestyles or be active, be outside, their eyes light up and are just I had no idea, " said Rogers.

Rogers said making people aware of all that is available has been the biggest challenge, so she hopes through the contest excitement will build.

"Hopefully we'll get some great submissions and be able to send those on and maybe we'll be we'll be winners, " Rogers said.

With more trails in the works, they know it may take time but it's Fit Kids' hopes that more people across Comanche County will become biking enthusiasts and embrace being outside and being fit as a routine part of their life.

"I'm really hopeful to become that kind of community where we are biking, we are walking, it's the norm to see that, and so this would be a step further in that direction, " said Rogers.

Kyle Rogers said they've only had a couple of submissions so far, so at this point chances of winning are looking pretty good. The submissions in Comanche County will be judged locally, and then sent to the state level and from there to a national competition. The grand prize is a bike, helmet, light and a trip to Washington DC.

The theme is "Bikes Make Life Better" , and the phrase must be included in the design.

Submissions are due by March 29th and should be mailed to:

Kyle Rogers, Fit Kids Program Coordinator

1010 South Sheridan Road

Lawton, OK 73501

Include your name, address and phone number on the back of the poster. The contest is open to all 5th graders across Comanche County.

If you have any questions please contact Kyle Rogers at 580-585-6686
