Lawton-Ft. Sill Regional Airport Control Towers Will Close

Posted: Updated:

LAWTON, Okla_Lawton-Ft.Sill Regional Airport towers will be closing after all. Friday, the FAA announced it's planning to close 149 regional airport control towers due to federal spending cuts.

This will also include Westheimer Regional in Norman, Wiley Post in Oklahoma City, and Stillwater Regional. The plans involve closing the towers over a 4-week period beginning April 7th.

Critics worry that the closures could impact safety. The FAA responds by saying it will manage the system by reducing volume, not safety.

Last month, Lawton's Airport manager told seven news their air traffic controllers already work in tandem with controllers at Ft. Sill on incoming flights, so the change will be unnoticed by passengers.
