Early morning fire claims life of elderly resident

The Amarillo Fire Department tells us the fire sparked around 12:20am Monday.

Firefighters responded to the scene and had the fire under control within twenty minutes.

The blaze was contained to just the kitchen area.

When firefighters began searching the rest of the home, they found an elderly resident in one of the rooms.

The victim, identified as 96 year old Jay Evans, was taken outside but was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy has been ordered and will be performed in Lubbock.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The estimated damage to the home is $15,000.
